Perhaps best known for his longtime association with Steve Coleman, bassist Anthony Tidd has been increasingly stepping out into the spotlight as a composer, curator, and bandleader. He’s been the Creative Music Program Director at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia for over a decade, and recently composed an orchestral piece for the Buffalo Philharmonic as part of the 2016 Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute. Here’s Tidd performing at the “Sittin’ In” jam session he curates at the Kimmel Center, alongside fellow Philadelphian Orrin Evans.

Back in 2002, Tidd released The Child of Troubled of Troubled Times with his band, Quite Sane. This year, Tidd was commissioned by Chamber Music America to compose a followup. This weekend, Tidd will present this music at The Jazz Gallery for the first time. With longtime collaborators Sean Rickman, Miguel Zenon, Miles Okazaki, and Paul Cornish, as well as a slate of varied vocalists, Tidd’s composition is sure to traverse a continent of groove and texture.

Anthony Tidd’s Quite Sane plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24, 2022. The group features Mr. Tidd on bass, Kokayi as emcee, Laurin Talese and Erika Hicks on vocals, Paul Cornish on piano, Miles Okazaki on guitar, Miguel Zenon on saxophone, and Sean Rickman on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M.
