Watch: Bohemian Trio

Photo by Laura RazzanoFreshly assembled in 2013, Bohemian Trio has positioned itself as a confluence of three distinct voices working to acknowledge their musical origin while defying boundaries. Based out of New York City, this contemporary ensemble features Yosvany Terry on saxophone & chekeré, Yves Dharamraj on cello, and Orlando Alonso on piano. With a focus on unique instrumentation and improvisation, the trio hopes to create a new sound that is rooted both in European and South American melodies and the rhythms of the African Diaspora. As Nate Chinen of The New York Times points out, Bohemian Trio “…specializes in music of traditional Latin American origin, though its methods are cosmopolitan.”Yosvany, who performed here earlier this month and has been performing at the Gallery for over a decade, is a celebrated Cuban saxophonist, composer, and educator on the New York jazz circuit who has “has helped redefine Latin jazz as a complex new idiom” (The New York Times).Yves Dharamraj is a Franco-American cellist, soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and teaching artist. Educated at Yale and Juilliard, Dharamraj has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and performed works with orchestras in Houston, Green Bay, Edmonton, Florida, and the Dominican Republic.Orlando Alonso, a Cuban born pianist and conductor, is internationally recognized for his orchestral and recital performances in North America, South America, and Europe. He has not only performed with numerous orchestras  but is also the winner of many competitions, including the Amadeo Roldan Piano Competition in Havana, the Sant’ Agata li Battiati in Italy and the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition in New York. Alonso studied at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. In their EPK, Alonso expounds on their aspiration to make something that is "...not strictly jazz, not strictly rock, not strictly classical, but just a contemporary idea of music."Check it out here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MgGdIE0irAAlso, be sure to watch their rendition of Sonia Jacobsen's composition "Butcherbird" at the DiMenna Center in New York:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ7ZccEZhhUBohemian Trio performs at The Jazz Gallery this Friday, February 28th, 2014.
