Theo Hill Trio

Photo courtesy of the artistAs a pianist and composer, Theo Hill straddles the divide between jazz's past and present. Hill can swing with ease and authority, which is why he's become a regular sideman with the likes of trumpeter Charles Tolliver and trombonist Frank Lacy. But Theo also has a foot distinctly in the now. His compositions can be flowing and atmospheric, punctuated by synth lead lines. Or, they can just get down and funky. This past October, Hill released his debut album as a leader, Live at Smalls (Smalls Live), a record that showcases his multifaceted musical personality, as well as his deep connection to his bandmates: saxophonists Dayna Stephens and Myron Walden, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Rodney Green. This Thursday, Hill will come to The Jazz Gallery with a trio featuring Green and bassist Yasushi Nakamura. Come see Hill and his bandmates journey to unexpected places within the realm of jazz. The Theo Hill Trio plays The Jazz Gallery on Thursday, March 5th, 2015.
