While growing up in Mexico, Melissa Almaguer took tap dance classes. Since then, her tapping has taken her all around Mexico and beyond. An alumna of The School at Jacob’s Pillow, Almaguer is now based in New York, collaborating with the likes of dancer-choreographers Michela Marino Lerman, Derick Grant, and Jason Samuel Smith.

Recently, Almaguer has expanding her practice in different musical directions, like with this scintillating performance of four of Charlie Parker’s most beloved tunes:

This Wednesday, August 10, Almaguer makes her Jazz Gallery debut with her project Praesēns. From the Latin word meaning “present,” the project brings together musicians from different traditions including flutist Kana Miyamoto, bassist Liany Mateo, tabla player Roshni Samlal, and vocalist/sound healer Jessica Caplan. Expect the group to stretch out in patient dialogue, with Almaguer showcasing novel and surprising tap textures.

Praesēns plays The Jazz Gallery on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. The group features Melissa Almaguer on tap dance, Kana Miyamoto on flute, Liany Mateo on bass, Roshni Samlal on tabla, and Jessica Caplan on vocals & sound healing. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. $15 general admission ($10 for members, FREE for SUMMERPASS holders); $25 reserved cabaret seating ($20 for members, $10 for SUMMERPASS holders). Purchase tickets here.
