This Monday, March 28, The Jazz Gallery is pleased to welcome pianist Orrin Evans and his trio back to our stage in celebration of Evans’s birthday. Evans has a long relationship with the Gallery, both as a bandleader and as a mentor in our Mentorship Series. In a previous interview with Jazz Speaks, Evans talked about his perspective on one’s music changing over time—an appropriate thought for a birthday:

There’s only twelve notes in the chromatic scale. You would think that about twenty years you’d know what the possibilities of those twelve notes are. You’d probably think you know all the ways you could play those notes in a B-flat blues. Once you accept that that’s all there is to do with those twelve notes, that’s all you're going to play, that’s all you’ll be able to sound like. But if you step back and ask yourself how to play differently, how to rearrange the notes and tweak your approach, those same twelve notes can be opened up to so many new possibilities.

Alongside bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr., don’t miss Evans continue to open up these possibilities on stage at the Gallery.

The Orrin Evans Trio plays The Jazz Gallery on Monday, March 28, 2022. The group features Mr. Evans on piano, Luques Curtis on bass, and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. $25 general admission ($10 for members), $35 reserved table seating ($20 for members) for each set. Purchase tickets here.
