The Jazz Gallery Presents: Mario Castro + Strings

Photo courtesy of the artist.Just over a year ago, saxophonist Mario Castro released his sophomore album, Estrella de Mar, featuring his strong, young quintet complemented by a string section and several special guests. The album received much critical acclaim and has helped establish Castro's bonafides as a bandleader, right on the heels of his mentorship project with Miguel Zenon. It seems that Castro has been bitten by the jazz-plus-strings bug, as he returns to The Jazz Gallery this Thursday, October 22nd, with a whole slate of new compositions for his quintet and strings. Castro will be videotaping this performance to help introduce this new music to the wider world. Once can only imagine the compositional strides Castro has made in the past year, building on the already-strong work on Estrella de Mar.
