The Jazz Gallery Presents: Maria Grand

Photo courtesy of the artist. This Saturday, April 2nd, The Jazz Gallery is proud to welcome saxophonist Maria Grand back to our stage. This is Grand's third time leading a group at the Gallery in the past twelve months, with progressively larger groups each time. Last April, Grand came with a trio, joined by Matt Brewer on bass and Sean Rickman on drums. This past October, Grand performed with a quartet, adding David Bryant's piano to the mix. In an interview with Jazz Speaks, Grand spoke about how adding a chordal instrument was a bit of risk for her:

I’ve played with a trio before because I didn’t really want to have a harmonic instrument, you know, a piano, because a lot of times with a piano you can feel boxed in. But the thing about David [Bryant] is it’s the complete opposite. He’s very tasteful and has such a great ear that I never feel boxed in. He really knows how to comp.

On Saturday, Grand adds another flavor to her music, bringing in trumpeter Adam O'Farrill to join her on the front line. Before coming to the Gallery to watch the sparks fly when these two young horn players team up, check out this just-released track by Grand, bassist Rashaan Carter, and drummer Craig Weinrib, equal parts zen and knotty. The Maria Grand Quintet plays The Jazz Gallery on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016.
