The Jazz Gallery Presents: David Virelles

This weekend, pianist David Virelles takes up residence on The Jazz Gallery stage alongside bassist Ben Street and drummer Eric McPherson. The performances coincide with the release of Virelles’s newest recording as a leader, Numa (Pi Recordings). Primarily a solo piano project, Numa showcases Virelles’s embrace of musical diaspora, morphing the piano to evoke the sounds of kalimbas, harps, and beyond. Virelles himself describes Numa as “a metaphor for the piano as an ancient instrument.” You can check a few tracks from the record below.

Alongside the never-predictable Street and McPherson, Virelles is likely to stretch beyond the material on the album, sure to yield 4 distinct sets at the Gallery this weekend.

The David Virelles Trio plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28, 2022. The group features Mr. Virelles on piano, Ben Street on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. $25 general admission ($10 for members), $35 reserved cabaret seating ($20 for members) for each set. $20 livestream access ($5 for members) on Saturday only.
