Marcus Gilmore: "Rolling Grace"

Photo via Okay PlayerOn Monday, August 19th and Tuesday, August 20th, The Jazz Gallery will be welcoming drummer Marcus Gilmore to the stage with pianist David Virelles and harmonica player Grégoire Maret, along with some special guests.Described by the New York Times as a drummer who executes complex music with ”a rolling grace and swing,” Gilmore is one of the most in-demand drummers in the city today. Coming from a musical family that includes his grandfather Roy Haynes, he has worked with an esteemed lineup of jazz greats, including Kenny Garrett, Vijay Iyer, Mark Turner, Steve Coleman, and, most recently, Chick Corea, with whom he just released the highly anticipated album, The Vigil. Gilmore kicked off his musical career even before graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan, studying under the mentorship of his grandfather starting at the age of 10 and performing with his teacher Steve Coleman at the age of 15.Gilmore has graced the stage at The Jazz Gallery many times before—we even commissioned him as part of our 2007 Composers’ Series, footage of which can be viewed here. He will be joined this time by a pair of ambitious and adventurous musicians: David Virelles on piano, who was noted by the New York Times as one of four major young pianists on the rise, hails from a musical family in Cuba and, like Gilmore, quickly rose to the top as one of the city's most in-demand pianists since his arrival in 2008. Gilmore is also joined by Swiss-born harmonica player Grégoire Maret, who is a graduate of the prestigious Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Genève and the New School, and has toured with Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, and Herbie Hancock.Marcus Gilmore, David Virelles, Grégoire Maret, and their special guests will perform at The Jazz Gallery this Monday, August 19th and Saturday, August 20th, 2013. Sets are at 9 and 10:30 p.m., $20 general admission and FREE for Members and SummerPass holders. Purchase tickets here.
