Amina Figarova Reunion Band

Photo by Jake SchotIf pianist Amina Figarova is what we’d call a global citizen, then jazz has been her passport. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Figarova has studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, lived and worked in the Netherlands, and since 2010, has called New York home—at least when she’s not on a cross-continent tour. Her thrilling music draws its oxygen from all of these sources and experiences—a sound that’s at home in any room on the planet. For her performance at The Jazz Gallery on Thursday January 9, Figarova has convened a special reunion band of musicians she first met while studying in Boston and at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Colony in Aspen, Colorado. Featuring Jaleel Shaw on alto sax, Wayne Escoffery on tenor sax, Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Derek Nievergelt on bass, and Jonathan Blake on drums, this concert offers the rare treat of hearing Figarova play with old friends. In the meantime, check out this performance of Amina and her working sextet from this past March at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola.Amina Figarova's reunion band plays at The Jazz Gallery on Thursday, January 9.
